The Sorell municipality has grown rapidly in recent years, with the local population increasing by 50% over the last decade. This growth is expected to continue, as younger families are attracted to the area for the housing and employment opportunities it provides. To help cater to the growing demand for residential housing stock, Sorell Council engaged ERA to undertake stakeholder and community engagement and assist in a review of land use zoning and infrastructure service requirements near existing residential and commercial areas.

ERA implemented an engagement plan that leveraged digital and in-person techniques, including an online community sentiment survey, drop-in session and one-on-one touchpoints. This engagement provided a sound understanding of landowners’ appetite for change in relation to rezoning, future subdivision, and the provision of improved open spaces and active transport connections. ERA also engaged with infrastructure providers to determine any constraints to further residential development within the project area.

The project was able to confirm the residential development potential of the project area and make recommendations for planning scheme changes to achieve that potential. The project culminated in a detailed engagement outcomes report. That report will enable Council to pursue the most appropriate development pathway with confidence and community support and to take steps towards catering to the needs of a growing community.
