ERA was engaged by Southern Waste Solutions (SWS) to assist with environmental and planning approvals required for the expansion of the existing Copping Landfill in southern Tasmania.

The Copping Landfill has been operational since 2001 (accepting Category A and B waste), with the Copping C-Cell developed in 2018 to allow the site to accept Category C waste, including some controlled wastes, as defined under the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994 and the Waste Management Regulations 2020. SWS manages the Copping Landfill in connection with the Lutana Waste Transfer Station.

The driver for the project is the limited capacity of the existing landfill cells and the need for expansion to allow the site to continue to receive Category A and B waste.

ERA is assisting SWS with the development of an Environmental Effects Report and Planning Approval in order to operate two more cells at the landfill. ERA is also assisting with the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement and Planning Approval to expand the landfill further.
