ERA was engaged by the Department of State Growth to undertake a review of the Roadkill Monitoring and Adaptive Management Plan (RMAMP) for the Tarkine Drive. The Tarkine Drive was upgraded in early 2015, including sealing and improvement works to a section of road to promote greater visitation by tourists. The upgrade works were approved by the Australian Government as a controlled action under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), due to potential impacts to Matters of National Environmental Significance, including possible increased incidence of roadkill for species such as the Tasmanian devil and spotted-tailed quoll. The approval required the development of the RMAMP to manage potential roadkill impacts, to be updated every five years.

ERA completed a review of the success of the management and mitigation measures outlined in the RMAMP through an analysis of quarterly roadkill data from 2014-2021. Based on the outcomes of the review, ERA developed an updated version of the RMAMP to cover the period from 2023-2028. ERA also completed an audit of the Department’s compliance against the remaining EPBC approval conditions. This audit included identifying conditions that the Department may seek to amend, to ensure conditions are outcomes-based and aligned with current best practice.
