A new 14 storey hotel will soon be situated within the heart of Hobart’s CBD, on the Coogan’s site in Collins Street. The high-quality development was designed by Telha Clarke Architects and will comprise hotel accommodation and services, restaurants and bars, and function facilities.

The final design is an amalgamation between the site’s heritage and context. In collaboration with Purcell, key heritage elements were identified for retention and incorporated into the built form design. These were then combined with new and modern materials to provide contrast, resulting in a sympathetic design response to the historically significant place.

Despite a consultative and iterative planning process, the development application was initially refused by the Hobart City Council on heritage grounds. Our client subsequently appealed the decision at the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, where they were ultimately successful in obtaining a planning permit.

We are proud to have been involved in this project which will make a significant and positive contribution to the built form landscape in Hobart.

We acknowledge and respect Tasmanian Aboriginal people as the Traditional Owners of Lutruwita (Tasmania).

They are the original custodians of our land and waters. We respect their unique ability to care for country and deep spiritual connection to it.

We honour Elders past, present and emerging whose knowledge and wisdom has and will ensure the continuation of culture and traditional practices.
